Common Problems With Furnaces
There are some typical problems that we see on a more regular basis than others. If your residential units seem to be having problems, it could be one of these common issues:
- Broken Pilot Light used to be a simple item failure but newer furnaces have electrical components which spark to light the pilot and have safeties which prevent the gas from coming on if the pilot is not lit. Sometimes it is nothing more than a dirty flame sensor locking out the system. An experienced technician can determine the problem and frequently fix the problem at a minimum cost.
- Dirty Filters – If you haven’t replaced your filter within the last month, it should be replaced. A dirty filter can happen quickly, and if it is not taken care of, the hot air will not circulate efficiently. This puts too much strain on the rest of the furnace and often causes it to lock out for safety.
- Faulty Thermostat – The thermostat in your home is what communicates to the furnace and tells it when to turn on and what temperature to maintain when it does . If it is not calibrated properly, it may not be giving the furnace the right information. This is usually the last cause of a furnace blowing cold air but if the thermostat has batteries, be sure that the screen is not telling you the batteries are low.
One of the best ways to prevent these heating issues from happening is to invest in regular maintenance. It only takes a short amount of time, and our technicians can check for small problems before they become big issues. We like to do this pre-season and offer a discount if you do. We also discount our maintenance for purchase of multiple visits up front. We will send you a postcard to remind you that it is time to schedule your maintenance.
Heat Pump repair
Heat pumps are more economical to operate when your only source for heating is electricity. Heat pumps utilize the compressor to make heat by reversing the direction the refrigerant travels. On air conditioning the air blows across coils filled with cold refrigerant and into your home The unit gives off warm air outside. On heating warm air comes into your home when hot refrigerant fills the coils and cold air is given off outside. In this cycle, the unit builds frost outside, periodically senses this, and goes into a defrost cycle. There are various timers and sensors that enable this process and our experienced NATE certified service technicians can diagnose and repair heat pump issues as well as check the refrigerant levels for proper operation.
